I just experienced a nightmare! Imagine travelling in today's world without having a smart phone. Well, I had mine, I had the emails, the booking details for flight and for hotel in Singapore. But, for the first time while making such a trip, I had not bothered to have a paper back up of anything.
So approaching the airport in Davao city, while in the taxi, I just realized that my Smart phone, that I had used just half an hour before, and that was at 91% on the battery, just refused to work! It was totally dead. I tried to feed electricity to it from my Powerbank, but no reaction.
I got stressed to say the least.
Davao International Airport in Mindanao, Philippines, has a direct flight to Singapore with Scoot Airlines. I knew this, and that the flight was around 5:30 pm, but I had totally no idea about the name of my accomodation or its adress in Singapore.
It was all nicely prepared on my phone, and on FaceBook, and of course in my Yahoo Mail.
Problem is, even if I had my laptop with me, there is no public WiFi in that airport.
I was lucky not having to show my ticket when I entered the airport. And since I had my passport, the staff at the counter of Scoot checked me in.
I proceeded to the second floor, and a woman asked me if I wanted to buy something from her shop there. I said, no, and told her my problem. So she and her friends there helped me out, so I could open my email and at least get the name and street adress for my hostel in Singapore.
When I landed in Singapore after a nice flight of roughly 3 hours, I had no map, nothing.
But I managed to find out that the area was close to the statue of Raffle, and also not too far from the City Hall, so I jumped on the MRT and got to Raffles station. There I found a map on the wall showing the area, and I recognized the street of my hostel. I looked a the map, and ventured out to look for my place.
After walking for like 20 minutes with a suitcase and my back pack, I finally found it. There I could plug in my laptop and connect to WiFi and tell my wife back home what happened.
The next day I purchased a new phone, travelled to Bangkok, and then to Pattaya, happy to have a Smart Phone again so I could book a Bolt taxi to pick me up from the bus stop.
What I want to share last, is that right now, I again touched my dead phone, as I have done so many times for the last couple of days, and now it came back to life, as if nothing had happened.
I learnt my lesson though:
Always bring with you paperwork that has the details needed for your travel, just in case.
